Website usability testing checklist in 2017
I've been pondering a lot recently about my procedure. Experience is a powerful point, but it's rare that we try to map out that which we know and really sit down.
Even though it's portion of one of my offerings that were compensated, I've decided to share this checklist. Several disclaimers: First, I do not claim this listing is special or comprehensive. Jakob Nielsen has an excellent 113-point checklist for example, Homepage Usability, in his book. This is my way of organizing what I feel is essential while attempting to keep it manageable. My usage of phrases might differ from yours. I use "usability" in an extremely broad sense, and my use of "accessibility" isn't very industry-standard. Don't like it? Write your own checklist ;) Lastly, an advance warning that this post is quite lengthy.
The list is divided into 4 roughly equal sections, (I) Accessibility, (II) Identification, (III) Navigation, and (IV) Content. I'll rationalize and explain all line things and the sections under, however you can download the checklist as a basic, 1-page PDF.
I try to keep it easy with 3 fundamental scores: (1) Green Check Always = Great/Pass, (2) Red Check = Wants work, but no disaster, (3) Red X = Negative/Fail. Not all points are necessarily applicable to all sites.
Flash & Add-ons Are Used Sparingly
No matter how fantastic your site looks, individuals won't wait FIVE FULL MINUTES minutes for a plug-in to load. Use technologies sparingly and only when it really improves your targets. Sticking to regular HTML/CSS is also a-plus for search engines.
URLs Are Significant & Consumer-friendly
This is a point of some debate, but meaningful keyword-based URLs are typically excellent for both search engines and guests. You don't possess to re-engineer a whole site to get URLs that are new, but do what you can to make them descriptive and pleasant.
Major Headings Are Apparent & Descriptive
Most people don't read online, they skim. Use headings (major and small) to set content apart and keep it organized. Headings should be clear, and for Search Engine Optimization gain, using heading tags (, , etc.).
Company Logo Is Prominently Placed
Put your logo or manufacturer where it really is easy to find, and that usually means the upper- left of the display. People assume it, and they like it when you make their lives simple.
Clear Route to Con-Tact Information
Similarly, visitors want to know if they need to, they can get connected along with you. It is also tough to do company if you can not be contacted by any one. Preferably, list your con-Tact information as text (not in a picture) - it'll get acquired by search engines, including local queries.
Load -time Is Reasonable
Call me old-school, but I still want to determine sites come in less than 100KB (60KB is even better). Most people will just leave if your site takes forever to load. Yes, many people have broadband now, but that makes our patience even thinner.
Clear Road To to Organization Information
The good outdated "About U-S" page may seem boring, but self-assurance is crucial on the web, and folks require a simple way to discover more about you.
Navigation Labels Are Clear & Concise
Do not say "Communicate On The Web With Our Staff" when "Con-Tact Us" will do just fine. Your primary navigation should be quick, to the stage, and simple for mere mortals to grasp.
